Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
