Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
The filmmaker's unflinching commentary tackles the tyranny of female beauty as well as the feared consequences of ageing. Demi Moore offers a brilliant portrayal as Elisabeth, an aging celebrity demoted to hosting a workout series on television. Pushed out by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes an enigmatic and gruesome process known as "The Substance". This produces a youthful duplicate named Sue, resulting in an increasingly vampiric relationship between the two. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This Agatha Christie-esque story includes the talented actress playing Laura, an ace reporter who takes a break from writing about international wars to join a luxury cruise with a terminally ill Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her partner, as well as other filthy rich guests. However when a mysterious woman goes overboard during the evening and all passengers denies she ever existed, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Out now, Netflix
Presence Film
Steven Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities in this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely from the viewpoint of the spirit. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their recent residence, the filming device – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The teen shows signs of conscious of the poltergeist, and it seems defensive toward her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema
This Self-Referential Film
The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image through this autobiographical spoof. He plays a narcissistic film star playing himself who agrees to a lucrative offer to attend a birthday party in Mallorca for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. This Saturday, 9pm, the Channel 4 network
This Creepy Thriller
Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has made the children anxious. When Finney is kidnapped by the villain and imprisoned in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line in the room keeps ringing, with ghostly voices providing assistance, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky true story of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, though the lead actress manages to present the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, early morning, on Film4
This Espionage Thriller
This period's additional entry from the filmmaker is a espionage tale as precise like the turtlenecks used by Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is to discover a mole within their ranks out of five possibilities – one of whom is his own wife. Each performer are masters of calm composure, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the clever spy entertainment. This Friday, various showings, the Sky channel
