An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Since my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the bravery or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
